September/October Newsletter for S.T.E.A.M.
Welcome back to the 2022-2023 school year! I am very excited to continue S.T.E.A.M. instruction in the library this year. Classes that are scheduled for my class during the week will be learning all about S.T.E.A.M. If your child has S.T.E.A.M. in their program, three days a month will be devoted to S.T.E.A.M. projects and S.T.E.A.M. education. One day during each month, your child will be able to take out library books and learn research and library skills. The children will be able return their books when they complete them so they may take out other books during a future library period.
S.T.E.A.M. Program engages students in project-based learning using hands-on engineering applications. Students are exposed to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.) in a student-centered environment where they are encouraged to be problem solvers and innovative thinkers. When these areas are taught in an integrated way, students are better able to appreciate how each part is necessary for the success of any complex, real world project. During the first months of school, the children will be exploring the Engineering Design Process and will learn all about what scientists do on a daily basis. They will also explore various science tools to help them in future S.T.E.A.M. projects throughout the year.
I look forward to meeting with all of the students here in the library this year - whether it be to book shop or to come explore S.T.E.A.M.!

Why is STEAM Education important?
Not only can STEAM save the world, but it can also save our kids by making their future bright. STEM jobs are expected to grow by 16% in the US between 2014 and 2024 compared to only 11% for other sectors. And right now, science & engineering careers earn more than double the income of the median job in the United States. The best part? STEAM education can start at such an early age and is so simple to do! It can start with you and your family by inspiring your kids to ask questions and think creatively. It doesn’t have to be hard to incorporate STEAM into your world. It’s all around you! And here’s a great way to get started.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math Fun for Kids
Looking for some more STEAM inspiration that you can use right now? Check out my STEAM website online. I’ve compiled great resources for you to explore with your child. Visit my website for the most up-to-date STEAM resources to use on any electronic device at home. Also, make sure to check out the library resources on the site. NYC students can access Sora for free! Visit my website for more information. You’ll find great eBooks and interactive books to use at any time of day, any time of the week. If you have any issues or questions, feel free to email me at any time! The PS205 STEAM website is: https://steam205.weebly.com/

January/February Newsletter for S.T.E.A.M.
Happy New Year! I hope you’ve all had a great start to the new year and a wonderful holiday season. Currently, all my classes are exploring winter STEAM activities through the engineering process. All students also have access to our online Library catalog. Their usernames and passwords are the same usernames and passwords that they use to access their classroom's Google classroom. In addition to our e-books on Destiny Discover, they have full access to all the e-books the DOE provides on Sora. For information about these sites, please visit the STEAM/Library website at: https://steam205.weebly.com/. If you experience any issues with accessing these resources, please feel free to contact me at any time. You can find a link to my email on the same website. Just click on the "Contact" link on the website. Please be sure to use a valid email so I can answer all your questions promptly. You'll also find many STEAM projects that students can complete at home. These at-home STEAM projects change monthly so be sure to check the site often!
STEAM careers make up a huge part of today’s (and likely the future’s) economy, and it’s imperative that we fuel the natural, ravenous interest so many children have in STEAM topics (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). Sadly, that enthusiasm that young children have tends to fade when they get older. You can encourage your child to keep being inquisitive and curious about how things work in the world and try out a few STEAM challenges at home. STEAM activities are vital because in today’s age of information, the ability to innovate, be technologically fluent, and understand how and why things work together is incredibly important. Have them question, explore, and design things to help solve a problem - that's the heart of STEAM!

I often post various sites and projects for kids to try at home, but if you’re looking for even more projects to try with your children, there are plenty of free, online resources that can help boost your child’s creativity and problem-solving skills. One site that I’d recommend is https://lemonlimeadventures.com/50-totally-awesome-steam-projects-to-boost-creativity/. This site shows STEAM activities for various grade levels that are simple and easy to try with your child at home. Another great site to try is https://babbledabbledo.com/25-steam-projects-for-kids/. Don’t be afraid to try any of the projects listed – it’s ok to not get it right on the first try! That’s part of the process. As always, if you have any questions or want to reach out to chat, I’m always an email away!
